Chapter History

The original Dixie was organized in Tempe, Arizona by Mrs. Nellie H. Woods. It was chartered on June 11th of 1917. The Dixie Chapter was very active during World War I in patriotic activities. In conjunction with the Robert E. Lee Chapter, they furnished a bed in a hospital in France that was turned into an orphanage after the war. Dixie was disbanded in 1949. Their last payment to the UDC was in 1948.

Dixie Chapter #1679 was reactivated and chartered in Tempe, AZ
on April 15, 2008, with 10 members and Mrs. Carol Dustin, as the Chartering President.

Chapter Activities

We attend monthly meetings, where we conduct Chapter business, exchange information, and socialize with our sister members. We contribute to those in need, particularly the Randolph Relief Fund and veterans’ support organizations. Our members volunteer at Veterans’ care homes and soup kitchens. We present Military Service Awards to the descendants of Confederate soldiers and sailors. We attend historical organization events. Some of our members are researching their family histories in order to honor their Confederate ancestors with supplemental applications.

We also attend the Arizona Division’s Confederate Memorial Day services at the Arizona UDC Marker in Wesley Bolin Plaza on the Phoenix Capitol grounds on the Saturday closest to April 26 each year. We also participate in the Sons of Confederate Veterans services at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix.
