Chapter History
The Chapter was chartered May 18, 1961, with 8 members under Mrs. Leo Gatlin, Arizona Division President. The first President was Mrs. Lavina Rhyne. It was named for Col. John Robert Baylor, the grandfather-in-law of charter member Mrs. George Wythe Baylor (Elisabeth Byrd). Col. Baylor issued a proclamation in 1861 in the name of the Confederate States of America establishing the first Territory of Arizona to include all that portion of New Mexico which lay south of the 34th parallel north latitude and extending from Texas to California. The Chapter’s first prime achievement was getting the City of Tucson to allow it to fly the Confederate Flag over the city. Each August 20th the Chapter is now invited to post the First National Flag at Tucson’s Birthday Celebration as one of the five flags that have flown over the city.
Chapter Activities
Activities are tied to the UDC’s 5 objectives (Benevolent, Educational, Historical, Memorial and Patriotic) with additional social events. The overall Goal is to honor our ancestors and preserve our heritage. Members give time, goods, and money to many other non-profit organizations, such as food banks, women’s shelters, museums, VA hospitals, and active duty service personnel and their families. They honor their ancestors and those of others, as well as US Veterans, at Memorial Day Services and mark graves of Confederate ancestors all over the South. Social activities include luncheons and an annual Christmas party/charity raffle. The funds raised go to a designed charity each year, such as the USMC’s “Toys for Tots” program.
